Are armored HDMI cables really necessary in home entertainment systems?

We are upgrading our home multimedia equipment and considering the need to connect devices over long distances. Some people recommend using armored HDMI cables, but I am not sure how they actually differ from regular cables and what their importance is in home use?

Over long distance (more than 50 feet or 15 meters) you may want to consider alternatives like HDMI extenders that allow HDMI over Ethernet cables (like these at Amazon). However, you may have to look and see if these devices support 4K (I'd assume you want your cables to be future proof).

Another option is HDMI over Fiber, with devices like these at Amazon
I did see this advertisement flying by from a company called FiberCommand, which seems to supply fiber optic solutions as well.

Note: I have note tested or used either option, but have seen the Ethernet version in action, and read about the Fiber option.
Hope this helps.
