I've been updating my setup and bought a USB 3.0 powered extension cable, but didn't realize some of my devices were still USB 2.0. I'm curious if they will still fit together and if I should expect any issues or slowdowns. Has anyone else experienced this?
USB3 devices and cables are downwards compatible, so your USB 2 devices should work just fine with it. Note that USB3 uses the old USB connectors, or the newer USB connectors, or USB-c connectors. Since USb 2.x devices use the old USB connectors, you may need an adapter if your USB3 devices use USB-c connectors. These adapters are usually quite cheap and can be found on Amazon or AliExpress.
Also note that USB2 devices will keep working at USB2 speeds of course.
Yes, USB3.0 active extension cables are backward compatible with USB2.0 devices. This means they can connect, but you should be aware of a significant factor: the connection will operate at USB2.0 speeds, which are lower than what USB3.0 offers. This is because the cable will default to the technology standard of the older device, affecting data transfer rates accordingly. For detailed insights into working with mixed USB generations, take a look at this guide on USB compatibility
I’m trying to use a USB 3.0 active extension cable with some older USB 2.0 devices, but I’m unsure if they’ll work seamlessly. Are there any compatibility issues I should be aware of? Also, does the active extension impact the data transfer speed or power delivery for USB 2.0 devices? Would love to hear from anyone with experience in this
USB 3.x is backwards compatible with all previous USB versions (USB 1.x, USB 2.x). The only difference may be the USB connector, for which you may need an adapter - see image below. If the connector fits, it'll work. (commonly USB-A)
Side note: when USB-C was just introduced, some of the cheap adapters (USB-A to USB-C) could cause WiFi interference (I noticed this on my 2016 MacBook Pro with a very cheap AliExpress adapter). None of my more recent adapters show this unpleasant side effect.
