With the introduction of the open source VMWare Tools, I already ran into the problem that local shares didn't work.
FYI: I'm running VMWare Fusion on MacOS X, and my virtual machine is an Ubuntu variant (XUbuntu) based on Ubuntu 16.x,

With the following statements, I did get access to my local (Mac) shares:

sudo mkdir /mnt/hgfs
sudo vmhgfs-fuse .host:/ /mnt/hgfs -o allow_other &

You can find the shares now under /mnt/hgfs

Just a note:

1) In the settings in VMWare Fusion of that particular virtual machine, you will need to enable shared folders and add at least on folder to share.

2) The terminal statements are to be executed in the virtual machine.
