I bought a Windows 8 upgrade DVD and wanted to install it on a clean system - I really don't want left overs from older Windows versions on my drive, so I prefer a clean install. The Windows upgrade DVD however will not let you do this unless you use this trick:
1. Install Windows 8 as if it's a normal install. Avoid entering a key and most certainly do NOT activate Windows.
2. Once installation has been completed, open the registry with regedit (as admin if possible) and change the following key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSetupOOBE]
"MediaBootInstall"=dword:00000000
Make sure the value is set to ZERO.
3. Open a command prompt as admin (Right click -> Run As Administrator)
4. Type
slmgr -rearm
5. Reboot
Windows will activate by itself - you can also execute RMActivate.exe in the command prompt to activate Windows.
