I've modified the beta a little bit (desperate attempt: it tries to install the helper, if that fails it waits 1 second and then tries again).
Would you mind testing this version (2.3.2 beta)?
It has been signed and notarized.

Temporary link (will be removed in the future).

More "options"?

ls -l /Library
drwxr-xr-x 14 root wheel 448 Mar 7 21:05 LaunchAgents
drwxr-xr-t@ 13 root wheel 416 Mar 7 23:21 PrivilegedHelperTools

Never heard of Lingon X before, so no, don't have that!

I am the sole user/admin. I don't have any antivirus installed, but have LuLu installed/enabled as well as Cisco VPN.

I fully reinstalled macOS 26.3.1, just in case it was corrupted during the update. Didn't change a thing!

Forgot to mention that I tried 2.3.2, but same behaviour, asks for the helper to be installed, enter password twice, then error and open-close the app instantly.

Log Window

Ah, I totally forgot about that. Apologies.

Log

I see a few positive messages:

authd Succeeded authorizing right 'com.apple.ServiceManagement.blesshelper' by client '/usr/libexec/smd' [108] for authorization created by '/Applications/ApplePiBaker.app'

Just not sure if these messages are related (and if so: it could point to a timing issue):

invalidated because the client process (pid xyz) either cancelled the connection or exited

More options

I figured as much - this would be default for most users anyway.

Beta version

Bummer ... 😞  Thanks for testing though!
I'll try and see if I can find a better place/way to wait for the helper to be installed.
Almost feels like macOS doesn't complete the installing of the helper in time.

That went quicker than expected 😊

Please try this version: link. (I've added a build number and removed the previous test version)

I removed the previous retry delay, and extended the send/receiving of messages for 0.1 seconds to 2 seconds.
Let's see if that helps 😊

Ah crap 😞

- Did you remove all the previous APB (with all extra files) and reboot before installing the test version (just to make sure there are no interfering leftovers)?
- Just though of this: Are you running ApplePi-Baker from your /Applications directory? If not, then this could explain something as well.

After some more digging (guessing) I see APB is not the only application encountering this issue. 😞

Migrating to SMAppService is a future plan, but it will come with quite some work and in that case I might as well make an ARM binary (or universal binary) as well.
Although a universal binary may be challenging due to the compression library that I'm using.

I always removed the previous APB and rebooted, also used AppCleaner to help find the little remnant files here and there. APB is in ~/Applications.
That was gonna be my next question: will you make an ARM binary, since Rosetta is phasing out in 2027?

Yes, I am planning building an ARM version, I just need to find the time and courage to get started 😉

It will be a very time consuming project, in which I'll also want to try to use SMAppService to see if this works more reliable.
Been thinking about it for a bit now and am considering starting from scratch. Again: lot of work, so I need ot find some courage 😊

Yeah that's going to require some time and effort. If you need some help, let me know!

To be fair, your app is the only one on the market to do both backup and restore quite reliably. The other ones can only restore but don't offer any backup tool, which defeats the point of restoring. Works fine, up until macOS decides to wreck everything.

That is super nice of you to say - thank you 😊

As with moth of my tools: I build them at some point for my own purposes and then at some point things go a little overboard even when I no longer use the tool myself 😜
This one has been a nice study on working with Helper tools (really NOT liking helper tools at all - well, at least not the way Apple implemented this, maybe SMAppService will be better).

Are you utilizing the compression (zip, tgz etc) and shrink/expand options often?
Just being curious as those come with the most work.

If only I could do this as a fulltime job 😉

Always backup with compression on, tried once without it and I choked on how big the archive was haha

Expand yes, when restoring an archive, shrink, only on some occasions, but it came really handy on these few occasions!

That's not really helpful, all your features are rather unique and helpful to me (and many other people out there!), but I understand these are intensive to work on. I would say compression is the most important one, and then expanding and shrinking.

You could ask the community (GitHub, GitLab, etc.) to contribute to rewriting the app, a subscription plan or a one-time purchase to support the development of the app. Just putting it out there, though I don't think this is of much help ^^
