MacBook Pro - Force use of discrete graphics
February 5, 2016 10:36 PM
For those who have a MacBook Pro with discrete graphics build in (AMD or nVidia), and would like to force it to always use the discrete video chip (GPU), could use the tool described in the article I wrote here: MacBook Pro – Switch Video Chip at will …
If you prefer not to use that tool, with newer Mac OS X versions, you can also do this in Energy settings.
Go to "System Preferences" -> "Energy Saver" and uncheck the option (on top) "Automatic graphics switching".
This will force the system to always use the discrete graphics chips.
Note that your laptop will probably run hotter, and your batter life will be much shorter.

If your do NOT see this option:
- Your Mac doesn't have a discrete video chip (GPU)
- Your Mac OS X is rather old
