I had to convert quite a few simple PSD files to PNG files (this trick may not work with very complex PSD files).

What worked very well for me:

  1. Rename all PSD files for PNG (so mypic1.psd -> mypic1.png, mypic2.psd -> mypic2.png, etc).
  2. In Terminal, in the directory where the renamed PSD files are store:
    sips -s format png *

This will convert all images (*) to the png format, pretty quick. Note that each file will be overwritten by its PNG formatted version.

I did use HexFiend to verify the headers and make sure these are now indeed PNG.
To optimize the images (saved app. 40% in filesize for my files), use: ImageOptim (highly recommended to optimize file size for PNG and JPG images).

Note: sips (Scriptable Image Processing System) comes with macOS (seemingly since 2005).
