I appreciate all the hard work. I’m not trying to be mean, but I don’t understand how this program got screwed up so badly. I loved this program. LOVED it. It was so easy and simple. Everything worked. Now….
The search is terrible. Terrible. I shut off the other search options so I don’t get slammed with duplicates but if I type in “fate zero” it’s like – NO RESULTS. We have no idea what you mean! Type in Fate/Zero there you go! Why is it like that? It wasn’t like that before. Why did that get changed?
It’s also not putting the shows in order when I add a directory. The old version would figure out what order the shows would go in even if they were named a little different. Then if I try to drag a file to its correct location it auto throws me to the top. Where did the little bar go that signifies where you were dragging the show to? Why can’t I drag a file past the top of the text box? I used to be able to do that. Now it’s like, drag the file as far as it can go. RESET. Drag the file a little more RESET. Drag the file some more RESET. Why is it like that?
Don’t even get me started on the UI. Why change something so much that wasn’t even broken?
I have renamed over 50,000 episodes with the old version. It worked great. I just don’t get why these changes were implemented.
Have you ever tried the option where it auto changes the metadata for .mkv files?
Jmkvpropedit can do 500 files in about 40 seconds. This program takes a minute a file. It certainly was a great idea. Just didn’t pan out.
There are so many more things that I am forgetting. Here’s the skinny, this program is now SIGNIFICANTLY worse than it used to be. I get that you are doing this for free. Thanks. It’s better than renaming files by hand, it’s just, why screw with something that wasn’t broken?
I am a power user of this program. I will continue to use it and hope for the best. Here’s what to change for the next update, ASAP:
– Search (make it work, turn off all the options by default, have it recognize when you enter foreign names for shows, use the code from the old version. )
– Get rid of update Metadata – it doesn’t work
– MAKE THE DIRECTORY ADD FUNCTION LIKE THE CLASSIC VERSION! – Why do they get added out of order? Every time I add a directory my next step is to scan all the files and fix the order. It’s wrong pretty much every time.
– Stop making the program automatically reset to the top of the list every time you move or remove an item. It is SO ANNOYING when you are dealing with large amounts of files. So annoying. MAKE THIS #1!!!!!!!!!!
– Fix the UI. Make it clear where you are dragging files to, Put the little bar in there. Remember, it resets back to the top every time so if you are renaming 250 files at once, you have to search through and figure out where it landed.
– Put the option to revert back to the good version clearly on the page. This version is so much worse.
Thanks. I appreciate you doing this. I just don’t see the point of doing something if you are not going to do it properly. My first suggestion would be to actually use the program. Use it to rename stuff and then see what works and doesn’t. Don’t just add a couple items and be like, “It worked for that so it must be fine!” A good programmer is a good tester.
Rename My TV Series: 2.3.12 (Build 21)
SQLite library: v.3.51.0
OS: macOS, Version 26.3 (Build 25D125),
Data path: /Users/user/Library/Application Support/Rename My TV Series/
It would additionally be helpful to know what other settings have been done (eg. AutoDetect on/off, sort enabled, etc).
Testing
I just don’t see the point of doing something if you are not going to do it properly
[personal rant ON]
You assume I do not test what I'm building, which is frankly insulting.
If my changes are not to your liking, I'd recommend choosing a more friendly wording so together can either resolve issues or improve the application. Over half a million downloads without your specific complaints, so this could also mean "user error". You're the only one going bonkers (assuming the other "rant" was you as well - based on language style. I apologies if that assumption is wrong). As you can see in the forum here, some very critical Linux users have expressed their wishes and I always try to accommodate where (and when) I can.
I have spends literally months of my life working on this, for free, which just started as a gimmick to develop cross-platform, and I think I do deserve to be approached with a little respect for that. Plenty devs have quit their projects (SubSync being one of them) because of user approaching their free work like this, and it most certainly is not a motivator to help or improve things.
[personal rant OFF]
Having said that, let's see what we can do to make things better.
Search Results
The search is terrible. Terrible. I shut off the other search options so I don’t get slammed with duplicates but if I type in “fate zero” it’s like – NO RESULTS. We have no idea what you mean! Type in Fate/Zero there you go! Why is it like that? It wasn’t like that before. Why did that get changed?
Disabling the Cleanup function should produce results better suited to your needs.
Unfortunately, the API calls to TVDB, TMDB and TVMaze, produce a lot of "waste", and for most shows the cleanup does a great job (in my experience). That has not changed for several versions now (as its the provider prodcuing the results). Only the "Cleanup" feature has been modified over time.
You can either toggle it on/off with this button (for your current search - so you can quickly toggle and test):
It’s also not putting the shows in order when I add a directory. The old version would figure out what order the shows would go in even if they were named a little different. Then if I try to drag a file to its correct location it auto throws me to the top. Where did the little bar go that signifies where you were dragging the show to? Why can’t I drag a file past the top of the text box? I used to be able to do that. Now it’s like, drag the file as far as it can go. RESET. Drag the file a little more RESET. Drag the file some more RESET. Why is it like that?
Apologies if I'm not quite getting what you mean, I assume the order under "Selected Files"? There are two settings influencing this, and from what I'm reading you may have "AutoDetect" enabled? (bottom right to temporary disable this, or in Settings under "AutoDetect" options.
I may need more details to fully comprehend what you're doing - apologies for that.
Note that when AutoSort and AutoDetect are disabled, files will be added at the end. Unfortunately the mechanism in which Lazarus Pascal handles dropped files/dirs, or selected files/dirs, does not retain the original sorting order (which has been an annoyance on my end as well).
UI Changes
Don’t even get me started on the UI. Why change something so much that wasn’t even broken?
Functionality wise not much has changed here - the only changes is that now most controls are native controls, versus before where controls were not native controls. This was done to avoid issue with the different operating systems.
So ... you'll have to be more specific when it comes to that. In my own experience, usability has not changed much and I have no idea what you are referring to - please elaborate, as I'm very open to making improvements.
Also note that some changes are the result of having to move to the new TVDB API.
Metadata slow
Have you ever tried the option where it auto changes the metadata for .mkv files? Jmkvpropedit can do 500 files in about 40 seconds. This program takes a minute a file. It certainly was a great idea. Just didn’t pan out.
I am very aware that ffmpeg is super slow when it comes to editing metadata - so I have it disabled under Settings - Renaming Rules - Metadate options - Update or Add Metadata (obviously disabling it doesn't "fix" it). I personally do not even touch it and the option was added by user feature requests - it has been there for quite a few versions now though.
Also keep in mind that metadata support has to be compatible with other containers than just MKV (eg. MP4 should at least be supported as well and Jmkvpropedit does not support MP4's AFAIK).
I'm open to suggestions here, please let me know as proper metadata would be a very nice to have.
