Open a Terminal window and type (or paste):
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
Open Finder again and now hidden files are visible.
You can undo this with:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder
This trick has worked for me even in El Capitan (10.11).
