Remote shell access for a network connected RPi running Raspbian is pretty simple.
Option 1: Manual start when needed
sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start
Option 2: Automatically start SSH on boot
sudo update-rc.d ssh defaults
(reboot is needed, use: sudo reboot)
Note:
Current versions of Raspbian have SSH installed, but if yours does not, try:
sudo apt-get install ssh
