Sometimes you run into this fun moment where you (or the user who's computer you're working on) forgot the Admin password - specially when installing programs or updating the OS ...
With this simple trick, the Admin password can be reset:
1. Power on the Mac.
2. When you hear the chime, press and hold COMMAND+S (Apple key+S) to enter Single User mode.
3. Optional, run a disk check (takes a few minutes, but it's worth it):
/sbin/fsck -fy
4. Mount the drive as read/write:
/sbin/mount -uw /
5. Remove the "Apple finished the installation procedure" file:
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
6. Shutdown the Mac:
shutdown -h now
On reboot, the Mac thinks you're in the final step of finishing installation and will ask you the usual registration and settings when you run a Mac for the first time ... including: asking for the Admin Password.
