As usual: Canon is super slow and retarded when it comes to their Camera software.

The "EOS Utility" (2.x) no longer works under Mac OS X 10.10. However with a little trick we can get it to work by using a newer version.

The problem I ran into is that the new version does not appear under the EOS 70D Software for download, and is not posted under "OS X Yosemite" either ...

For my Canon 70D and MacOSX 10.10:

1) Go to the Canon website and look for the EOS 6D

2) Under Drivers/Software set the OS to "OS X Mavericks 10.9"

3) find the EOS Utility 3.0.1 under "Software"

4) Check the "I have read and agree to the terms"

5) Click the Download button, which opens a new window

6) Enter the serial number of your EOS 70D

7) After Download, install ...

After installation everything works excellent on my setup, WiFi seems to work smoother.

Again: Version 2.14 of EOS Utility does not work under MacOSX 10.10.

Awesome!

I'm extremely satisfied with the 70D and this version of the EOS utility works as expected: great!

Just wanted to make sure it wasn't used before, but it's all good. Tried couple of apps but only one worked on mac, from appstore. 2.99eur.

Installed EOS utility but when run it prompts error that it's not compatible with this version of OS ...

Did you download the version in this forum post? Or did you try the one that can be downloaded for your camera?

Yea I got it working too. Installed the one from cd first and then updated it with the one from canon website. I have to say till now the 70D feels pretty awesome except couple things. The UI design is not really optimised for touch, I really hope they will update it. The wifi setup is bad too. I found that the wps pin option is the most quick and easy way to connect it...atleast for me.

So are you a hobby shooter or whats the story ?

Hi Maniic,

I'd consider myself a hobby shooter, with way too much invested in this hobby haha ... got some great lenses, 3 bodies (M, 60D and 70D), but like all other users, we lack a great all-purpose lens.

How about you?

The thing I absolutely love is the picture quality I with Canon. I've tried other brands and models but the only camera I have truly loved before my Canons is the Sony DSC F828. Sony unfortunately dropped that very practical design and (in my humble opinion) never got close to what that little camera achieved.

The gripe I have with Canon is the UI for one indeed. That could have been much better.
Since I have worked with the F828 a lot, getting used to the "classic" SLR body, even with flip screen, still annoys me till this day.

The way WiFi works is not all that great either. Quite often I run into issue when trying to connect and such. But I'm getting the hang of it ... maybe.

But ... the 70D is indeed an awesome camera! I've done some stunning pics with it.

My favorite lens (picture quality) is the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM - it's an amazing lens, tac sharp and super fast. So good that I have a hard time working with my other "normal" lenses. Downside are price, weight and size. It's a BIG lens and not suitable for close up ... well keep a few meters between you and what you'd like to photograph, if only to avoid that you hit the subjects with your lens haha ...

I did add the x2 Extender to that lens, which gives it a stunning zoom ... and length haha.

The other lenses I have are pretty generic and I do not use them as often as I'd want. The big lens has not been rivaled by any of them when it comes to quality of the pictures. I do have some EFS lenses, but from now on I'll only buy the EF models.

Whatsup Hans,

Sorry for the late reply was gone for couple of days. Anyway back to the topic. Absolutely nice collection of hardware you got there haha! Myself I'm just a guy with too many interests and photography just happens to be one of the latest and indeed one of the most expensive. I had a dslr before couple years back and something triggered me to buy one again. So far I'm pretty pleased with the 70d, still some minor annoyance with the UI but it keeps getting better. I've been using the standard kit lens till now (18-55) but am in the market for a new lens! any suggestions ? Don't go crazy on me with the "L" stuff haha. I cant make my mind up between portret photography or landscape  (prime/wide). Was thinking of canon 50mm 1.4 or Tokina 11-16 or zeis 50mm...

One thing I dont get by the way, lets take for examle the EF-S 10-18 from canon. Now this particular lens is made for the aspc camera's, so I assume that the 10 is in this case really 10mm on the 70d or should I multiply it with 1.6. Because it doesnt make sence if they put '10-18' label on a lens that is made for aspc cameras but the numbers are ment for fullframe...if you know what I mean

Hi Maniic!

No problem  .... I'm not always the fastest in replying either  .... and I travel a lot, so that makes it sometimes a challenge.

Photography is just a hobby, have been active with it on and off for years now ... my dad is to blame haha.

I would indeed assume than when an EFS lens says "10" then it means really "10".
As for recommending a lens: that's hard!

I love my big lens, I mean absolutely love the quality (Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 USM), but it's expensive, not suitable for close by, heavy, and BIG.

I guess I most often use the Canon EFS 18-135, which came with my camera.

With my previous Canon I had the Canon EF 28-135, great lens, and I regret selling it with the old camera. Also, this is NOT an EFS so multiply by 1.6. Great glass though!

I also have the EFS 10-22, which is not a bad lens, but the aberration at the edges is a little disappointing.

I do have a Canon EF 50, great quality but no zoom and in the end I never use this one.

If possible in your region, consider renting a lens before buying. I have done this once (for the L lens) and right away had a good impression of what to expect.

For no logical reason I have always stayed away from non-Canon lenses, but that doesn't mean that those are bad in anyway. Like I said: for no logical reason ...

I definitely recommend to checkout DPReview for their lens reviews and their forum. There are quite a few folks there willing to help out selecting a lens. I also recommend to always check the comments at Amazon.

Now that I have you confused even more ... haha

Oh yes I actually got the chance  to test the EF 70-200 2.8 L the other day. It was actually  the first time that I   got it in my hands so I was really   shocked by the weight and build quality compared to non-L's. Really amazing how fast it focuses and not to mention the image quality !  The owner, a senior citizen, got it as a gift and didnt really  use it.  It hadn't seen day light in years. He was the the local video-photo-montage guy for a community church. It actually hurt to see the lens so neglected haha.  Anyhow I have the 50mm 1.8 EF too but don't really use it. It can produce good pictures but the build quality is sooo rampzalig! Thats the main reason I want his big brother, the 1.4.
Yea I get your non logical way of thinking, have some of those too. Got Flickr ?
